As Tharp discusses in her book The Creative Habit, the inspiration for Westerly Round came from a news article about a piece of ancient pottery bearing one of the earliest known representations of tribal migration. This primitive image of people linking hands is woven together with folk dance references in Tharp’s work. The four dancers are high-spirited and playful as they leap, spin and do-si-do in a display of the American frontier spirit: a blend of individualism and partnership.
Company dancers Charlie Neshyba-Hodges, Emily Coates, Jason McDole and Dario Vaccaro perform Westerly Round in 2003.
