Tharp presented an early version of Noir in the performances that followed her residency at the Kennedy Center in 1994. The dance was later revised as a stand-alone work and premiered by Grand Théâtre de Genève Ballet.
In a series of vingettes, Noir presents five dancers blind to the ballerina in bright red who walks among them. The ballerina slowly dominates the other dancers, forcing her influence upon them. When they can no longer ignore her presence, the dancers collapse upon one another and she towers above them en pointe.
