Ragtime is Tharp's second collaboration with director Miloš Foreman. Shot on location in London and New York State, the film is based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel of the same name. The dance sequences in Ragtime are more understated than those in Hair, which was originally a Broadway musical. Tharp referenced dance films of Vernon and Irene Castle and the late Victorian Era in preparation for the production.
