THE ILLUSTRATED ‘FAREWELL’ is an extended pas de deux for a principal couple set to the first two movements of Haydn’s 45th Symphony. Joined to a large ensemble work, originally premiered in 1973, the last two movements of the symphony were titled AS TIME GOES BY and featured a gender/diversity respectful cast in which the first passage, a very aggressive, percussive 45’ solo was performed in silence by a single female and then the ballet tapered down to a long fluid adagio danced by a single male with the symphony's conclusion. In between, the company were treated all as individuals, no hierarchy, women sometimes partnering the men. An equality and balance of a different sort to that delivered in the first two movements by the symmetrically even principal couple who were ever but half of a more traditional classical whole. THE ILLUSTRATED 'FAREWELL’ questions whether what ‘classical’ could be stretched to in 1973 was still valid decades later.
