abstract
A trio in which visibility is determined by the sets: section one in the open, section two, half hidden, section three,
one third visible, section four, entirely hidden
review extract
?exhibited the stubborn point of view that dance should be a conceptual rather than
a physical matter...using only three steps?
Re-Moves , made in 1966 at the time of the Vietman War, was an abstract on a bleak time.
Tharp established units of locomotive movement and repeated them ad nauseam until,
like a repeated word, the gestures lost sense. It?s progress was to show less and less of itself
representing government betrayal. Set in four sections and performed
without music, Re-Moves (meaning both ?to do over? and ?to take away?), began in the full
rectangular area of the Judson performing space with the audience pushed to three sides.
The second section, danced partially under a balcony. The third section took place around a
large plywood box, eight feet high, the audience seeing only one quarter of the action as the
dancers passed between the box and the audience, working around the perimeter of the box.
The fourth section was performed inside the box, the audience seeing nothing, only hearing
shufflings and murmurings, the sounds of the next piece being rehearsed.
